If the wallpaper is alight color like yellow or pink and you’re switching to a light blue or red, you might not have to peel the wallpaper yourself. However, if you can’t paint over it, you’re going to have to scrape or strip it.
When you’ve peeled your wallpaper, you will probably find chipped and peeling paint. To get this off of your wall, you must scrape this off before you can add new paint to the wall. When you’re scraping old paint from the wall, you need to be sure that you don’t scratch your walls. A broad knife is a great tool for scraping old paint.
When you’re done scraping the old paint or adhesive from your wallpaper, you can start patching up the minor scratches or holes that you have on your wall. If you get all of the wallpaper off and notice water damage or any other large amounts of discoloration, you are going to need to call in a professional. You can fill small cracks and holes with joint compound or even wood putty.
After you’re done filing the holes in your walls, you will want to sand all of the surfaces clean. When you sand he surfaces, your paint will stick to the rougher surface better. After you have sanded your walls, you will need to rinse the wall and let is dry for twenty-four hours.
Before you paint the wall, you’re going to use a cloth or some plastic sheeting on your floors. For your trim, you need to get some painting tape so you do not get spatter or dripping on them. Once this is done, you’re ready to start painting. Be sure to use long, even brush strokes and protect your floors before you ever start.
